25 Aug 2026 — A new video from Hvidovre Municipality shows how the Avedøre Energy Community keeps growing
Hvidovre Municipality has released a video on the local energy transition in Avedøre, tracing the story of the Avedøre Energy Community, Denmark’s first energy community, created with POCITYF’s support. Today residents, companies, public institutions and local organisations still work together on it, and the municipality now wants to replicate the model in other neighbourhood, as part of the Replication Plans and City Vision for 2050
A similar ambition is already taking shape nearby, in Avedøre Holme. Home to around 700 companies and separate from the residential Avedøre neighbourhood, this is one of Denmark’s largest business parks. Current legislation excludes large companies from joining an energy community, and that’s a real obstacle since most local businesses here fall into that category. The numbers show what’s at stake: businesses CO₂ emissions production registers around a third of Hvidovre Municipality’s, and a fully developed energy community could save 15,000 tonnes of CO₂ every year, which is the same as the annual emissions of 1,200 Danish residents.
The Avedøre Energy Community’s work has already gained recognition. In 2025 it won Green Power Denmark’s Green Power Award for its approach to citizen engagement and the local energy transition. The award marks another milestone for an initiative that POCITYF helped launch and that will keep thriving beyond the project’s lifetime.
