18 Aug 2025 — The Avedøre Energy Community wins the 2025 Green Power Award for driving Denmark’s local energy transition with citizen-led innovation
The Avedøre A.M.B.A. Energy Community has recently been awarded by Green Power Denmark with the prestigious Green Power Award. The community received a grant of 30,000 DKK in recognition of its innovative approach to local energy transition and citizen engagement in the municipality of Hvidovre, Denmark.
The award highlights the success of this locally driven model, which brings together citizens, housing associations, companies and utility companies to make Avedøre a sustainable energy hub. In the early phases of the EU-funded POCITYF project, key partner European Green Cities worked alongside the City of Hvidovre to establish the community.
“POCITYF was instrumental in bringing forth both finances and time to engage citizens and sparking high ambitions for long term planning of the local area. And it’s such a pleasure and with pride to see project sprouts grow up to become autonomous and lasting interventions. The forces were already in the area, but POCITYF provided a way to combine them.” commented Rasmus LT Hedegaard, Development Consultant from European Green Cities.
This recognition confirms the increasing role of citizen-led initiatives in shaping Europe’s future energy systems and marks a significant milestone in the regional Strategic Energy plan, aiming for a fossil-free electricity and heating sector by 2030 and a fossil-free transport sector by 2050.
