17 Jul 2024 — Discover how POCITYF helped transform an apartment building in Alkmaar into a replicable model in Europe, capable of generating 100% of its electricity needs.
The Noordertogt apartment building in Alkmaar, hailed as Europe’s most sustainable flat, exemplifies the challenges and potential of transitioning to renewable energy within the framework of the POCITYF project. This 1970s building underwent a comprehensive renovation to curtail carbon footprints and achieve energy independence through renewable resources.
The interventions focused on advanced energy solutions, such as installing circular roof insulation and 785 solar panels. This large-scale endeavour required constructing an additional floor—a steel pergola standing three and a half meters high. Due to the significant power generated during peak times (surpassing grid capacity) two 70 kWh batteries were installed in the basement. These batteries capture all surplus power generated between 12:00 and 14:00.
Additionally, the building underwent a renovation of its heating and ventilation system. The exhausted ventilation air from the flat now passes through a heat pump, ensuring that the incoming outside air is preheated once again.
However, the success of the retrofitting is measured not only by its achievements in energy efficiency but also by instances of actual replication. As project manager Ben Uffen stated, “We have recently shared our experiences with a group in Budapest who also manage large flats, allowing them to benefit from our insights. Therefore, the Noordertogt project is a win-win for all involved“.
