Alkmaar installs the first lamppost with charging point for electric cars and boats in the city center

12 Jan 2021 — The municipality of Alkmaar is getting a very innovative gadget on the Voordam. An existing lamppost is converted into a 'combination pole' with charging points for electric cars and boats.

Thanks to POCITYF he municipality of Alkmaar is getting a very innovative solution on the Voordam. An existing lamppost is converted into a ‘combination pole’ with charging points for electric cars and boats. “That creates a calmer street scene in the city center and requires less space,” said the municipality. Alkmaar is the first city where this pilot will be rolled out.

Because the number of electric cars and boats in the city center is steadily growing, the municipality decided to sign up for the pilot. Two electric cars and two electric boats can be charged simultaneously at the post. The top part of the combi pole can be replaced if sustainable innovations will require it in the future.

Several locations have been investigated, but in the end the Voordam was chosen because there is already an application for a connection point for an electric car. Other possible locations are the Oude Gracht, Waterlaan, Kennemersingel and Verdronkenoord.

Climate goals

The project is one of the ways in which the municipality of Alkmaar is implementing the European climate objectives.

Recently, the installation of 940 solar panels at De Meent has also started within this project . “The combination pole with a connection option for electric cars and electric boats is a great innovative addition for the municipality of Alkmaar, making us the first in the Netherlands,” said Alderman Elly Konijn.
